What constitutes a cult?

Okay so a number of things have sparked my interests in cults recently. Just reading about them, talking about them, and looking into them more than I had in the past.

But my question to you is what in your mind constitutes a cult? When does a religious group turn from just bible bashers to cults?

Technically, I think it is just a matter of size, going from cult/sect to full blown religion once they get enough members.

Yeah - the thing that gets me though is I am a big reader, knowledge hunter etc on the tragedy at WACO.

Everyone likes to call them (the Branch Davidians) the religious cult. But to me a cult is like something of keeping to yourself, staying away from others etc however the Branch Davidians all had jobs in the local WACO Community, David Koresh on numerous occassions has the Sherriff at the commune for BBQ's, and all reports are that they were actually valued members of the community.

Apart from having someone think they were the second coming of christ nothing really jumped out to me as being cultish.

I guess thats why I started this thread to get others ideas of what constituted a cult.

Yeah, I guess it just matters how widely accepted it is. Wicca is probably considered a cult by some, but not by most these days.
