The way that this whole Pat Tillman propaganda fiasco has imploded upon the Bush administration is almost enough to leave one convulsing on the floor in laughter -- until the realization sets in that it was all perpetrated at the expense of a very decent, conscientious, heroic young man. :-(
The problem was that Tillman wouldn't play their game. To the Pentagon's chagrin, he turned down numerous offers to be its recruitment poster child.
But when Tillman fell in Afghanistan the wheels once again started to turn. Now the narrative was perfect: "War hero and football star dies fighting terror."
...P. S. Indulging my paranoid side, who would want to wager unconditionally that this scenario may not have been deliberately concocted, even to the point of "arranging" Tillman's unfortunate friendly fire mishap? :-? After all, what is the sacrifice of one unccoperative pro athlete-turned-soldier in the greater scheme of Bush's New Crusades?
