The thing for those intent on Control to ponder is this:

When you go out of your way to create a situation where you are so prominent, this is not considered success, because you offer as solution your own destruction.

What they must be thinking is, we'll get so powerful that nobody can fight back. And then they can admit what all along their aspirations were.

Ultimately a criminal can't succeed, relying on cunning and conspiracy in place of normal aspirations. How intelligent are they to not realize this?
