UGANDA will soon start exporting goats and goat meat to the Middle East, the Chairman of Uganda Dairy Goats Development Network, Dr Edward Ssewanyana has said.

Ssewanyana said goats especially the exotic white ones are on high demand in Syria, Turkey, Iran Qatar, and Oman. He said a number of farmers from the districts of Ssembabula, Nakasongola, Mpigi, Mubende, Masaka, and Luwero had been identified for large-scale production to meet the demand.

This project is expected to benefit about 108 farmers who will be given 200-500 goats and male goats for multiplication. Uganda Dairy Goats Development Network is an umbrella organisation of goat farmers whose objective is to encourage farmers shift from subsistence goat rearing to commercial.

Each farmer is required to operate from a minimum of 100 acres of land and have at least 500 goats.

Ssebuguya Estates Project in Mubende hads been earmarked for the pilot project expected to raise 1.242 million goats in three years.

He said the government has injected Shs5 billion into the project to boost production and enable more farmers to get goats for multiplication.

Uganda would also import white goats from Middle East cross breed them with local goats and multiply before exportation of the goats kicks off. Ssewanyana said plans underway to import white goats from Middle East and cross breed them with local goats to b oost local production.
