Default Oil in plastic.

Oil, is in nearly everything we make.
Most understand the oil-fuel correlation,
but few understand the true depth of the power
of oil in plastics.

We use plastic in everything, from food packaging to carpet. From cars, to electronics. From credit cards to pharmaceuticals. Plastic is virtually in everything.

So, as oil prices rise, so does the price of plastic.

And to me, this is more devastating to our economy than the fuel cost, which is detrimental.

People ask, why do we import from China? Well, cheap labor certainly is a factor. But what about plastic?

China's Oil Refining Capability to Hit 270 Million Tons in 5 Years
In the coming five years, China's comprehensive oil refining capability will reach 270 million tons, while the output capacity of ethylene will exceed nine million tons.

In its 10th Five-Year (2001-2005) Plan for the development of petrochemical industry, the Chinese State Economic and Trade Commission designed the guiding principles and development targets, as well as key development areas for the petrochemical industry in the coming five years.

Science & Technology (biopolymer)

According to a recent nationwide online survey, 72 percent of the American public does not know that conventional plastic is made from petroleum products, primarily oil. Moreover, 40 percent of the respondents believe that plastic will biodegrade at some point. The survey was conducted by InsightExpress on behalf of Metabolix, a company that manufactures a biodegradable plastic made with corn. (Bioplastics are becoming quite popular these days — you can read more about them here).

In their press release, Metabolix says "...Very few people realize that plastics are made from oil, further contributing to the problems of energy dependence, greenhouse gas emissions and depleting resources. In fact, nearly 10 percent of U.S. oil consumption - approximately 2 million barrels a day - is used to make plastic
