Once you produce a solar panel, it's good for 20-30 yrs. The secret, is to stop transmitting electricity over long distances. It should be produce more locally, each house, or at least, each neighborhood.

We lose around 30-40% produced through transmission lines. And then there is upkeep of this infrastructure. And of course, an ice storm or crashed plane can take out major areas of power, which we rely on for security, comfort.
