Default Robin cook: anyone know why he died?

Try this one for starters

Bin Laden was, though, a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida, literally "the database", was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians. Inexplicably, and with disastrous consequences, it never appears to have occurred to Washington that once Russia was out of the way, Bin Laden's organisation would turn its attention to the west.

'Loose cannon' comes to mind. What do others make of this sort of thing? Something tells me he knew some stuff and wasn't afraid to mention it. I think the Al Qaida "database" issue was not really mainstream knowledge but around the same time I recall it became officially admitted that Al Qaida was according to Blair not an organisation but just an idea or state of mind. So, conclusion, we have been fighting an idea. This does not look too good really.
