Brazilian cars have been running on ethanol for 20 years. Most cars today have "flex" engines that run on any combination of gas and alcohol, even 100% of any. When alcohol is cheaper, consumers fill the tank up with it. Now it costs only 50% of the price of gas, so it is very appealing. The car runs even better than with gas.
Almost all the gas stations in Brazil have pumps for both kinds of fuel.
That's why Brazil is now self sufficient in oil.

The problem for other countries is that ethanol is viable here because it comes from sugar cane. You should see the monster trucks that carry three wagons of load to the plants. Making enough ethanol from corn or beets is another issue.
