Compare it with the old tales of King Arthur then, if you don't think fairy tales are a proper comparison. Nevertheless, Harry Potter is nothing but a modernised equivalent of medieval folk tales (that were also full of magic). Stories about magic and mystery have always appealed to people and especially to children. There's nothing new about that.
