Military prisons. The House defeated, 228-197, a Democratic bid for an independent panel to probe U.S. military treatement of detainees at prisons at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, Abu Ghraib in Iraq, and elsewhere.

Iraq contracts. The House rejected, 219-196, a Democratic proposal to establish a committee to probe fraud in military and civilian contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Fuel standards. Senators rejected, 67-28, higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars, SUVs and light trucks.

Greenhouse gases. The Senate refused, 60-38, to require U.S. factories and power plants to cut "greenhouse gas" emissions to 2000 levels by 2010.

Defense budget. The House passed, 398-19, and sent to the Senate a $409 billion military appropriations bill for fiscal 2006. The bill includes $45.3 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afaghanistan, funds a 3.1 pecent military pay raise and provides $7.6 billion for missile defense.

How much has been approved for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan thus far????

In Peace,
