The first statistics we should know are the percentage of African/Americans and the poverty level in Galveston.

Seems evacuation proceedings in the Keys and Galveston were very organized.

In Houstoun there is a lot of refineries, many more than in the Mississipi delta. My bet this one is about the oil.
Houston is right behind Galveston. If Rita hits there, it will be too much of a coincidence.
Anyone from there who could tell us where the refineries are ? I remember they were by the water, but I was just passing by.

Some facts about Texas:

Texas consumes more energy than any other state--much of the natural gas and oil produced in the state never leave its borders. About 86% of the energy consumed in Texas comes from petroleum and natural gas.

Galveston, Texas - 2000 Census

White 71.0
Black 17.5
Asian 1.7
American Indian 0.4
Other 11.7
Hispanic 32.0

New Orleans, Louisianna

African American 67.3

Great thread ... let's see where they decide

to land Rita and how they will benefit from it ...

see how Hallibuton is getting those FAT contracts

in New Orleans and Bush pass laws to keep wages

LOW so the contracters make a killing on the

killings.
