Security fears as flu virus that killed 50 million is recreated

Scientists have recreated the 1918 Spanish flu virus, one of the deadliest ever to emerge, to the alarm of many researchers who fear it presents a serious security risk.

Undisclosed quantities of the virus are being held in a high-security government laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia, after a nine-year effort to rebuild the agent that swept the globe in record time and claimed the lives of an estimated 50 million people.

It always seemed to me that the best place to be, in case of all-out nuclear attack on the US, would be ground zero. That way there'd be no long, lingering death from radiation poisoning.

Of course, you're right, but it is just so very, very sad.

So much potential, so much promise, all headed for the dust bin of history.

What you want to bet, the big guys either have a vaccine or they will be in residence, read seclusion, on top of the Alps somewhere in Switzerland or Antarctica or Agharta - maybe inside the moon - until it mutates itself into harmlessness, as all epidemics/pandemics do?

Well, there was the Manhatan Project which led to the destruction of Hiroshima; not because of need, but for want of morbid curiousity.

but yeah, they have their safe places or antidotes/vaccine. It is un-nerving to me that I'm being viewed as a cockroach. :-P
