Default What is the big deal about 'growth'?

Hi all...first post.

Just read this today

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/nsw-residents-leaving-in-their-droves/2005/09/22/1126982184160.html

I stopped on the first paragraph:

'As Australia's most heavily populated state, NSW is struggling to keep pace with the national rate of population growth.'

Why is 'growth' such a big deal. Why is there a constant struggle to grow everything - be it population, business, profit etc? In a (supposed) world where we are running out of oil, land etc, why is there such a struggle?

In this case, would it be a bad thing if the population stopped growing? What would happen, other than the Georgia Guidstone-type people gleefully rubbing their hands?

Is it a purely western phenomenon? Or is it merely the capitalist way?

Methinks we're being conned. Or do I just have it totally wrong?
