I've heard different interpretations of this particular icon; I think of the cadeuceus: it represents the bronze snake held up in the Sainai desert for the healing of the people, and in fact it was a prophetic figure of Christ crucified.
Perhaps the snake, as a pagan symbol, does not belong in medical iconography?
