Self-defence? It's a complicated issue for most of us. Hollywood simplifies and glamourizes violence because it is part of their artistic bag of tricks.
But in real life, the best self-defence tactics in urban warfare are escape and evasion tactics. You will notice that in Jackie Chan videos, he will always turn and run when attacked if he can.
But as you say, LaD, there are times when you are confronted with deadly force with no escape.
There are also times when you know an attack might be imminent, so you make preparations. There is a scripture which says, "Take up your swords . . ." In Biblical times it was common to carry personal weapons, especially when travelling; I live in a city that has random violence almost every day, but I would prefer to learn combat tactics with an empty hand first.

AND: non-lethal weapons are getting better and better, too!

LOS ANGELES - The American Bible Society is refusing to print New Testaments with covers that say "Jesus Loves Porn Stars."

California pastors Mike Foster and Craig Gross, whose anti-porn ministry is called XXXchurch.com, had ordered 10,000 of the customized Bibles to hand out at adult film conventions.

But the edgy cover led the publisher to cancel the paid order.

The American Bible Society says that while it appreciates the pastors' mission, the words "Jesus Loves Porn Stars" are "misleading and inappropriate for a New Testament."

NO: they are not misleading, in my opinion; they show exactly what the New Covenant is all about. Think about who Jesus hung out with: " . . . publicans, and sinners, and prostitutes, . . .".
The implication is, of course, that it is irreverent to suggest a concrete example of the redeeming love of God. I disagree.
The only misleading element is the corruption of the word "love" to mean "Is fond of and approves what they do", or "Has a strong desire for them", or "Has sexual relations with them"; this is not really what the word LOVE means.
So, the semantic problem with the phrase is that some people might interpret it as tacit approval for sin, when in fact the true message is the impartial nature of Jesus' love - and a good lead-in for a deeper conversation about being "saved".

When it comes to self defense, it is okay to do what you have to do to protect your yourself and your family... however, guns are typically useless in this situation given various gun laws. If you think you can get to your gun from a locked cabinet or wherever, load it, and do all of this in enough time to defend yourself... more the power to you. This does not mean to start firing. You should have the gun on them with one hand and on the other the phone having dialed the authorities. You will know when your life is in danger. If you do pull off a shot, and claim to be a skilled marksman, aim for the leg to debilitate and not the chest. If you kill to protect your "material" possessions, perhaps you deserved to lose them.

I can hear the members of the NRA commenting already. I won't comment on them except to say that I wonder if they know the other amendments. Probably not.

It is never okay to kill someone... unless you or your loved ones are without questions threatened. A kill or be killed situation is not being robbed.
