Egomania The Invisible Pandemic

An unrecognized, invisible killer is stalking the world. The insidious aspect of egomania is its ability to take over the mind and soul of its victims, so that instead of seeing egomania as a disease, we are made to see it as the height of human reason (pursuing our self-interest) and the purpose of human existence (getting ahead). Even when we see its worst aspects---its most hideous visages--we are blind to its destructive lethality.

To succumb to egomania means that we become:

- limited in outlook or concern to our own activities or needs; blind to the larger reality

- concerned with self-gratification rather than the common good; focusing on greed instead of fellow-feeling

- obsessed with an exaggerated sense of self-importance; full of conceit instead of regard for others

- controlled by any one who flatters us or appears to consider our needs; followers of whatever cult leader appears to recognize our importance

Christopher Lasch's book The Culture of Narcissism, deals with the ideology "of competitive individualism, which in its decadence has carried the logic of individualism to the extreme of a war of all against all, the pursuit of happiness to the dead end of a narcissistic preoccupation with the self."

Egomania, narcissism, is the natural condition of the infant; the world exists merely as gratification or denial of personal desires. The caretaker--parent, nurse, teacher, religious authority--tells the infant what reality is and how he or she must behave in response to this defined reality.

It's at this stage of egomania and narcissism where most personalities stop developing; they remain in an infantile state even though they have matured physically. Ego-satisfaction is the only concern, avoiding punishment by authority figures and achieving one's individual goals is the life-game, and understanding or awareness is totally unnecessary and boring. The authority figures will tell us what is real and what we're supposed to do, so we have absolutely no need to think for ourselves. Since personal satisfaction is primary, however we achieve our goals is okay. There are no moral values beyond feeling good about ourselves and making others fear and respect us. Any consideration for the good of others is weakness and stupidity.

So we have high school and college students who want nothing more out of their educational experience than credits; they have no interest whatsoever in understanding the subjects they study. They're not even interested in developing skills; if they can get other students to do their assignments and tests for them, that's great. The majority of people in our culture merely want to get along, avoid trouble with authority figures, succeed in their careers, and cram as much personal pleasure into their lives as possible. In short, most persons in our society are grown infants. Showing off, having "attitudes," talking endlessly about oneself, swaggering through life, taking pride in ignorance and violence--these have become the norms.

Egomania is not just an arrested stage of development, not merely a slight malady or a minor social aberration; it is a blindness to reality which leads to death: death of oneself and others. The obsession with self and the grudging obedience to authority becomes so pervasive and consuming that we lose touch with reality and begin to live in solipsistic fantasy worlds. The infantile personality responds only to gross symbols, ideas, and commands: TV images of 200% patriotism, slogans ("dead or alive), bluster ("we'll rid the world of terrorism"); norms ("don't think about what American leaders did which led to the terrorist attacks; vote more money for an incompetent intelligence industry; forget about the workers laid off, give tax breaks to corporate executives").

American immaturity is clear from the unthinking, knee-jerk increase in the approval rating for a president who stole the presidency and can barely read his speeches from his cue cards.

Many religions say God is like a fire, but we do not know a great deal about this fire except that it is of an unbearable intensity. It is the fire of the pure Spirit and all forms melt and are destroyed upon contact with it. All those who have been embraced by this fire, have melted into it and merged into one flame. Many complicated books have been written about the experience of mystics. In fact it is very simple, the experience of mystics is the experience of fire, of the sacred fire. A person who has lit this divine fire within them feeds it every day by throwing pieces of his lower nature into it, in the same way that we throw wood into the fire. Watch a fire burn: all the dead pieces of wood that were until then separate, dispersed and useless, are united in one and the same light, one and the same heat, and they are forced to become incandescent like the fire itself. Similarly, by offering our lower instincts in sacrifice to the fire of the spirit, we will know what God is, the divine fire, because we will become like Him.

"The purpose of initiation is to extract a human being from their limited circle of their lower self in order to project them into the limitless circle of cosmic consciousness. This consciousness already lives within them, but they are not yet clearly conscious of it. Understand this well, there are two poles, i.e. yourself, here, the consciousness you have of yourself, in other words your lower self, and then your higher Self, your sublime Self, which also lives in you, works and manifests itself, but of which you are not yet fully conscious. This sublime Being wants to know itself through the dense matter that you are; it already knows itself up above, of course, but it wants to know itself down below also. Thanks to the efforts you make to imagine your higher Self coming closer, you will one day experience such illumination that your consciousness will know no more limits. You will be in the light and you will finally feel at one with your divine Self."

"How can we define human beings? The lower and higher natures are so inextricably bound in them, it is impossible to say where the one finishes and the other begins. The Divinity dwells in all beings, even the least evolved; the difference lies in their awareness. God is present in the coarsest and most amoral people in the same way and just as fully as in a spiritual Master, but because the coarse, amoral people are not aware that the Divinity is living in them, they prevent it from manifesting. And so, in certain beings and places the divine presence does not manifest, because they are closed to it and do not accept it. God exists in us, and he wants to make himself known in all his beauty, power, light and love. It is, therefore, up to us to become aware of this presence and to work at making it live more intensely each day within us."

Good and evil are two forces active in the universe. These two forces are placed under the authority of God, the supreme Being. This idea is present in the sephirotic tree: there is the right-hand pillar of mercy and the left-hand pillar of severity. Between the two rises the pillar of balance, with the first sephirah, kether, the crown, at the top. Those who think only of satisfying their ambitions, lusts and negative instincts range themselves along the left-hand path, where they provoke the powers of severity. They are not punished by a terrible, vengeful God but lay themselves open to the severity of the cosmic laws. Those who, on the other hand, choose to walk the path of light range themselves naturally along the right-hand path, the path of mercy, and attract only blessings to themselves.

Good always prevails over evil, just as life always prevails over death. Death only appears to exist. Look around you: everywhere you see life, and death is nowhere. It is only a change of scenery…or of costume! You say: ‘But if you murder someone, the evil you commit is permanent.’ Not so. In the first place, only the physical body has been affected. The spirit, which is immortal, continues to live, and sooner or later the person will return to earth in a new body. As for the murderer, even if he escapes human justice, he will not escape divine justice. One way or another he will have to make amends for his crime. Evil, like death, may appear victorious at first, but this victory does not last. Whereas the good, although under siege in the beginning, will, like life, triumph in the end.

"By means of our Spirit, our higher Self, we are close to God, we are in God, and it is through Him that we can master our lower self. On high we are already free and in the light, but we must be so here below as well. This relationship between above and below, spirit and matter, has been represented by the symbol of the serpent swallowing its tail. The head of the serpent represents our higher Self and its tail our lower self. By means of this symbol, the initiates intended to say: ‘You are both in God, in the light, and at the same time outside of Him, in the dark.' But head and tail belong to the same creature, to the serpent, so they are not separate. And since the serpent swallows its tail, this means that our spirit, our higher nature, works on our matter, on our lower nature: it seeks to take hold of our matter so that there is no longer any conflict between the two."

"How can people ever apply psychology and understand one another when they remain so self-centred? It’s as if they were blinded by the veil of their selfish, personal preoccupations; these are what prevent them from perceiving what is going on in the hearts and minds of those around them, even of their friends and family. They say they love them… Yes, but because of this veil, they fail to see them as they truly are so that they are astonished at times at the changes they’ll suddenly notice in their wife or husband, their children and their friends. Only when others leave them or commit some desperate act do they finally understand. Until then they hear nothing and see nothing.

Only those who have mastered their lower self and become capable of forgetting their own interests can really know and understand others."

"How often you are prepared to follow the advice of your lower nature! When it tells you, ‘You see that person – he has tricked you, wronged you, slandered you. You ought to teach him a lesson’, you rush to obey it, believing that right and justice are on your side. Well, they are not, and from now on you must be able to analyse where each impulse comes from. You will see it is usually your lower self advising you, and you should know then that no good will come of it. It takes years to acquire this discernment, for it is not so easy. In fact, it is a very subtle thing – the lower nature is able to take on so many deceptive voices and appearances!

A true initiate is someone who has spent their whole life learning just that: how to distinguish between the impulses of their lower nature and those of their higher nature. You will say, ‘Is that all?’ Yes, but everything depends on this discernment! As long as you do not work to acquire it, you remain weak, feeble and unhappy."

Each year, at midnight on 25 December, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. This is Christmas. There is no proof that Jesus was born on 25 December, or even in winter, and we are not even completely certain about the year… But, as with Easter, the position of Christmas in the calendar leads us to understand that this festival must be interpreted symbolically. Winter is the season when a long process of germination takes place in the seeds that have been planted in the ground, ending in spring with the birth of a wealth of new lives. A similar process takes place in the psyche of each person: in the dark earth of their lower nature, the seed of the divine self, the Christ, must begin to germinate. It is this event that Christians celebrate at Christmas: at midnight, at the time of greatest darkness, a birth takes place. This is why, in spite of the cold and the dark, Christmas is also the festival of light. Some will say they are not Christians and they don’t care about the birth of Christ. Well, they can call it by another name, if they prefer: whatever their religion, and even if they have none, all human beings have been created in the image of God. This image is within them like a seed, and they must try to find it to get it to open up.

Our higher self, our divine self is constantly sending us messages; and if we do not receive them, or if we receive them in a deformed manner, it is because we have accumulated too many impurities within us. Consider an oil lamp whose glass is smoky: its flame is not as luminous, as far-reaching or as beautiful as when the glass was absolutely transparent, and it must be cleaned. Well, a human being can be likened to an oil lamp: his inner light wants to manifest through him, this light, which is love and wisdom, must pass through all the layers of impurities he has accumulated as a result of his immoderate lifestyle, his disordered thoughts, and his egotistical sentiments. He must therefore cleanse and purify himself until his physical, astral, and mental bodies become so transparent and pure that this divine light, buried within him and struggling to emerge from the darkness, may shine in all its brilliance.

"Quite unexpectedly, it can happen that you suddenly feel flooded with light, that all of a sudden you are being projected upward, all the way to your higher self. You are dazzled by this beauty and immensity, and it feels as though from this moment on nothing could bring you down from these heights. Unfortunately, this doesn’t last. You have to pick up the threads of your everyday life, with its same worries, its same temptations, its same weaknesses. You feel cut off from your higher self, like a fragment cast aside, rejected. Some time later, you again feel enlightened, illumined, but once again it doesn’t last long, and you begin to feel discouraged.

No, you must not allow yourself to be discouraged by the fluctuations in your consciousness. If you persevere in your spiritual work, one day, after all the highs and lows, the light that comes to visit you will no longer leave you. You will have crossed to the other shore, and you will be saved forever."

"You still do not make use of the many opportunities given to you to unite with the divine world in order to calm and recover yourself. And yet, you know very well that the agitation of daily life finally destroys your nervous system. Human beings are not made to live in this constant tension that drains them of all their energies. It is not normal to run from morning to evening, and the nervous system eventually wears out. Several times a day, therefore, stop for a few moments. Try to create an atmosphere of harmony and love within you and around you. By repeating this exercise often, you will succeed in touching your higher self which will project beneficial rays into all your cells. It is thus that you will restore balance and once again be able to face all your daily tasks."

Through his higher Self, every human being is a divinity who lives in a sublime region where there is no sickness, suffering, limitation or darkness. But humans cannot yet feel or manifest this life of plenitude that exists on high, because their lower nature will not allow it. It is obtuse, narrow-minded, maladjusted and poorly tuned, exactly like a radio that is unable to receive certain frequencies. Waves propagated in the sublime regions by cosmic Intelligence are very short and very fast. Because our own matter is so thick and opaque, it cannot vibrate in harmony with these divine messages, and they slip by us without leaving a trace. Until we have worked on ourselves and refined our psychic matter, we will know nothing of our higher Self.

Where children and even adolescents are concerned, the stage is set for many years of upheavals and rebellions of all kinds, preventing their divine self from blossoming. But in time they calm down and become wiser, and all their good qualities begin to come through. Prior to that, it was not possible; the conditions were not right. Look at what happens in nature with vegetation: sometimes, because the temperature has been much higher than usual, some plants grow too soon. If they are unfortunate enough to be then subjected to a raging storm, or the temperature suddenly falls and there is a frost, the plants are uprooted or die of the cold. A plant cannot develop properly while conditions are not favourable. Well, this is also the case with humans: as long as they are exposed to inner storms or extreme temperatures, they are unable to hear the voice of wisdom, the voice of their higher self. They need to wait until passions abate; then conditions will be right for all their good qualities to be expressed.

Endeavour to go within to find your spiritual centre, your higher self, through which our heavenly Father manifests in us. And once you have found it, hold on to it so fast that nothing and no one can part you from it. This is what Jesus did; he had so strengthened this link that he was able to say, ‘The Father and I are one.’ Through your higher self, you too have the possibility of becoming one with your heavenly Father. If you are not aware of this, it means you are not allowing him to manifest. Every realm in the universe has its own centre, and there are connections between these centres that you must find and bring to life. Learn to connect your heart, the centre of life within you, to that other centre, the sun, and then through the sun to the Christ, and finally through the Christ to the heavenly Father, the sovereign of all realms. The only way you can make progress is to link with higher beings by means of this connection, because through this connection flows the divine life, and it is this life that is your nourishment.

"You still do not make use of the many opportunities given to you to unite with the divine world in order to calm and recover yourself. It is thus that you will restore balance and once again be able to face all your daily tasks."

"Human beings are so obsessed with their external appearance as a man or a woman that they forget that, above, on the divine plane, they possess both the male and the female principle. But they have to understand that ‘above’ is not light years away. It exists in them, too, as their higher part.

Initiation is a psychic process, at the end of which a person is able to merge with the complementary part of their being. Consequently they no longer feel they lack anything or ever feel alone anymore. Carnal bonds do not make a man or woman feel less lonely, as any number of people can tell you! They have accumulated encounters and experiences, but inside they are still alone, in the wilderness. Yes, because there are certain things they need to encounter first within themselves, on the psychic or spiritual plane. You will only find below what you have already achieved above."

"Disciples learn to mobilize their thoughts, their desires, and even all the tendencies of their lower nature, and so realize a sublime ideal. And the sun can help us in this work of unification and harmonization. As you watch the sun rise in the morning, think about your conscience moving closer to your own sun, your spirit, your higher self, to fuse with it. When you will have succeeded in pacifying and unifying all these opposing forces pulling you this way and that and so throw them in one luminous, salutary direction, you will become such a powerful centre you will be able to shine in all directions, like the sun. Indeed, those who have managed to sort out their own problems in order to be free, can begin to attend to the whole of humankind, and they themselves come to resemble the sun. They live in such freedom, they widen their field of consciousness to include the whole human race, to whom they send the profusion of light and love which overflows from them.

However, in order to be able to shine, we must learn to concentrate all the powers of our being and steer them in one divine direction."

"On Pentecost Sunday, Christians commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles in the form of tongues of fire. In reality, the Holy Spirit’s descent is a symbolic event found, in one form or another, in all religions. Since the Holy Spirit is said to have come down to the apostles, you might think it is an entity outside of human beings. But actually, no, the Holy Spirit is our higher self, that is to say the symbol for all that is luminous, powerful and divine in us. When we say that people receive the Holy Spirit, it means that their own spirit, that is their higher self, takes possession of them.

The higher self is part of us, but it is unable to come down and manifest in people so long as they have not cleared the impurities obstructing its path. When the day comes where humans truly purify themselves and achieve true sanctification, the Holy Spirit, their higher self – powerful, luminous and radiant – will descend into them and perform wonders."

"Although this entity we call our higher Self is part of who we are, it does not live in us. If it did, we would perform wonders. From time to time it comes to manifest in us; now and then it makes contact with our mind. But since our mind is not yet ready to vibrate in perfect unison with our higher Self, we cannot accommodate it, and it canno:t stay. It leaves, but it continues to work on our mind, preparing it to become its home one day.

When our mind is ready, our higher Self, which is nothing less than a part of God himself, will come to stay, and we will understand that in the higher realms of our being we are truly one with God."

"You will only manage to develop true clairvoyance when you rise to the highest part of your being, to your higher self. Every day imagine yourself reaching that higher self and becoming one with it. Imagine you have reached the summit, and from there you cast your eyes out into the universe... And because your higher self is omniscient and you have become one with it, all the knowledge you have already acquired, without realizing it, gradually descends into your consciousness, and you are dazzled by all you are suddenly able to perceive and understand. The only true vision is that which is given to you by the eyes of the spirit. To begin with, of course, it seems as if you see nothing, as if you understand nothing, but you are preparing the ground for true clairvoyance."
