He was a puppet!!

Perhaps, he, too, was going out on a limb and defying them.

If you seek independence once incapsulated in this cult, (and, in many cases you are their puppet, if you are a world leader, politician, etc. as they move you up the ladder into these positions, finance you, etc.), you might as well buy yourself a gun and blow your brains out or just wait for them to either suicide or blow your brains out for you.

Or, perhaps, a small plane crash. That seems to be one of their favorites.
